Winter Oral History Series
2026-2027
SIHA is proud to continue our partnership with the Stanley Community Library to bring you our winter oral history series. Join us throughout the quiet season as we share recorded conversations with Stanley icons and heros.
Programs are held at 5:30 pm in the Library’s community room on the dates listed below.
October 14: SIHA’s first program features a 2010 recording of a conversation with Marie Osborn. Marie founded the Salmon River Clinic in 1972 and became the first registered nurse practitioner in Idaho. She fought tirelessly to bring professional health care and emergency services to the Sawtooth region and her legacy lives on today at the Clinic.
November 9: This 2020 recording features Edna May McGown Jukich a member of the local pioneering family – the McGowns. The McGown family moved into the area in the late 1880s after the Yankee Fork mining boom had declined. In the 1970s, Edna Mae’s mother, Edna Niece McGown, assisted with the writing of Stanley’s famous history book, “Stanley-Sawtooth Country.”
January 21: Jim McClure (US Congressman (1961-1973) and Senator(1977-1991)) and Orval Hansen (Idaho State Congressman 1956-1976) discuss the establishment of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area in this 2005 recording.
February 18: In 2026, Dave Kimpton sat down with Susan Kim, the chair of SIHA’s oral history project, and share more stories from his time working for the US Forest Service in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area.
March 25: Steve and Kathy Cole share their experience running the Sawtooth Hotel in this interview recorded in 2021.
April 26: Believe it or not Stanley has a number of historic buildings. During his time as SIHA’s Board President, Gary Gadwa led the researched and developed a historic walking tour highlighting these buildings. This recording is from 2009 and Gary will be present at the program to share more.
